There are two different way of installing Windows 7 upgrade version the clean installation and in-place upgrade.

It will backing up the data, installing Windows 7 and finally restore the data and re-install all Windows programs and applications. The Windows 7 upgrade will recognize your previously Windows version.
The installation applied for:
- Upgrade from Windows XP
- Upgrade from a 32-bit Windows Vista to a 64-bit Windows 7
- Upgrade from a 64-bit Windows Vista to a 32-bit Windows 7
- Upgrade from a higher version of Windows Vista to a lower version of Windows 7
In-place Upgrade or Installation
A simple update from previous installed version of Windows Vista
The installation applied for::
- Upgrade from Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Ultimate
- Upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Ultimate
- Upgrade from Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate
- Upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate
For Mac users you had to be running the previously licensed full copy of Windows. For dual boot treat by Microsoft as two different machine license.
